19 June 2017, 10.30am: Multiple insightful and engaging questions were brought up during the opening ceremony of OPMUN 2017, which were directed to the guest-of-honour , Dr Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Communications and Information and Ministry of Education.
Many delegates brought up questions which were very sensitive. However, our guest speaker answered these questions to the best of his ability. Among the questions that were brought up, one particular question got both Dr Janil and several other delegates thinking.
The question touched on the highly controversial topic of censorship. The delegate asked if censorship was required, as well as the level that censorship could be taken to. Dr Janil answered the question stating that censorship is required in every country in order to maintain political stability. However, the government tries to ensure that censorship is not taken to a level that makes Singaporeans feel restricted and oppressed.
Dr Janil also stated that censorship should be applied appropriately in printed media, social media, and in speeches. Dr Janil encouraged Singaporeans not to criticise other races, or to act against the multiracial and multi-ethnic values of the Singaporean population.
