There are 180 delegates gathered in National Junior College today for the opening ceremony of the One People Model United Nations. It started off with a speech by Dr Janil Puthucheary, who is the Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Communications and Information.

Next was a question and answer session between Dr Janil and the delegates about topics such as Racial Harmony day and Act 377A of the Penal Code. There were also the mention of issues such as xenophobia.

Delegates were invited to come forward and ask questions so as to express their thoughts and stance on issues they were curious or concerned about. There was also discussion about racism due to there being a huge shift in attitudes of people towards immigrants around the world as welll as the increasing tensions among races.

But there was mostly a heated discussion about Act 377A of the Penal code which is a section of Singapore’s penal code that criminalises gay sex. All those questions were answered by Dr Janil to the best of his abilities. It didn’t go that well as there was quite a huge discussion between Dr Janil and the delegate himself. OPMUN has one goal in mind which is to promote the values of racial and religious harmony among youths.

After the discussion ended with Dr Janil having answered every question that delegates asked, Gregory Pio Chan, the Secretary General, ended off with a speech saying that 2017 OPMUN is the greatest as this time there were 180 delegates and it was an achievement for them as they wanted more people to join OPMUN. After the speech by Gregory, a small gavel was presented to Dr Janil after a warm handshake. To end off the opening ceremony, Dr Janil was handed a huge Gavel which he held while taking a picture with the OPMUN 2017 Secretariat before they sounded tha gavel to signify the end of the ceremony and the official opening of OPMUN 2017.
