THE STRAITS TIMES

Here in crisis, delegates are debating about the internal security. Here are the views of some of the delegates on the internal security of Singapore on this day in 1965.

John Vernon Rob said that troops were to be prepared and stay till 1980. These troops can be used to help and increase the manpower of troops so as to protect the country

Toh Chin Chye said that he trusts that the Minister of Foreign Affairs is attempting to establish better race relations to try and resolve the situation and to prevent more sabotage. It can also help prevent the increased spread of fear throughout the nation which may divide the citizens. He also emphasised the need to involve the Minister Of Education. He also reminded the cabinet that, “We are not a Chinese Country, we are not a Malay Country, we are not an Indian Country. We are Singapore.” This sends home the message that Singapore is a multi-racial and multi-religious country and the cabinet has to work harder to establish that. As the British troops are going to leave eventually, he feels that they should ask the British to train the Singaporeans to defend their own country as well as to possibly ask different countries to train them. He also believes that the Indonesians do not support their entry into the United Nations.

S Rajaratnam then said that Singapore does not align itself and that he aims to prevent certain points of interest from affecting our internal security as well as for Singapore to be unaffected by other foreign powers. If we don’t move ourselves forward and not suggest anything else, we will not be able to run the country or lead the country to success. To achieve this, they need weapons and professional armed people to protect Singapore. He also said that the recruitment of better armed soldiers is necessary as Singaporeans are not well trained enough to protect the country yet.

Internal security is the act of keeping peace within countries. Mr Othman Wok also mentioned his main focus which is to most importantly keep all Singaporeans safe and to ensure the  maintenance of internal security.

The Cabinet is are now discussing the issue more extensively to better protect Singapore and lead the country to success.
