180 delegates gathered at National Junior College today to witness the One People Model United Nations Conference (OPMUN) opening ceremony. It started off with a speech by Dr Janil Puthucheary, the Senior Minister of State, who highlighted the role of OnePeople.SG in Singapore today. He also discussed the relevance of discussing the topics in OPMUN and gave a few tips to the delegates.
Dr Janil’s speech was followed by a question and answer session between the delegates. Several delegates asked sensitive questions about matters like the relevance of Racial Harmony Day, censorship in Singapore, and other pressing issues including radicalisation and xenophobia in the world today. In the midst of the session, a total of three delegates were also involved in a heated discussion about Section 377A of the Penal Code with Dr Janil.
All these questions were answered by Dr Janil to the best of his abilities. At times, Dr Janil also asked for the opinions of the delegates themselves regarding the questions that they posed – he questioned the delegates’ about their stances and asked them for solutions to the problems that they had raised.
Overall, it was a fruitful session for the delegates. The opening ceremony ended off with a speech by the Secretary General of One People Model United Nations (OPMUN) Conference, Gregory Chan. Being the largest ever OPMUN conference, Mr Chan invited Dr Janil to officially open the conference. As OPMUN 2017 begins, delegates gear up for an exciting 3 days ahead.
