A Hint of Hope

June 20, 2017

After several hours of pointless debate, the NSCS has come up with a simple directive which the National Security Risk Assessment Group led them on. However, are these efforts effective? It is up to Singaporeans to make that decision.

One of the key proposals brought up by members of the NSCS was to broadcast verses of the Qur’an which call for the advocation of peace so as to serve as a reminder to Muslims about the peace that their religion spreads and deter Islamic fundamentalists from carrying out extremist actions against civilians.  However, is this capable of reaching most Muslims in Singapore and would Muslims be receptive to this measure?

A radical point proposed was the suggestion of a nationwide curfew from 7pm to sunrise  whereby all commercial shops would have to be closed and citizens have to be home. What are the economic and social implications of this not so elaborate proposal? Will the Singaporeans accept this proposal? We would have to find out if the resolution gets passed. Although it is said that businesses affected would be compensated, is this a sustainable plan?

There were also hints of a travel ban to be imposed and we shall find out how events unfold in the next session.
